I was in a heated discussion with someone whether Hilter was the peak personification of evil possible by a human being. During this discussion I started to discuss Hitler’s youth and upbringing. It was during this that the other person became instantly irate. He said that any discussion of of Hitler’s rearing was obscene. I was confused but his explanation has stayed with me and really made me think. He said if you truly understand someone then you are able to forgive them. That knowing how someone became what they are gives you the insight into seeing why they should be forgiven. He said that Hitler’s acts were so monstrous that he could never be forgiven, therefore, the attempt to understand him was in itself an obscene act.
